Jasmine got a boo-boo

Hello friends! Big Ern here. We had a busy weekend. Ok, Mommy and Daddy had a busy weekend. It started on Friday when Lilo and her parents came over for dinner. We just love pug company! Then on Saturday Mommy went to meet some girlfriends for lunch. They are all pug mamas, but no pugs went with them! Can you believe that??? The mamas were Kelly (Dixie, Sophie, and Harley), Jessica (Lilo), Laura (Salinger), and Sarah (Hank and Molly). I just don't understand why none of us got to go. Well, I can understand why Bernice didn't get to go...
We're not sure when exactly this happened, but Jasmine got gang tackled. Now, I was just giving her some love and some of the others may have gotten a little jealous, especially Neecy. Mommy saw this happen Thursday when we went outside after she got home from work. She saw Neecy, aka the psycho alien, with Jasmine's leg in her mouth. These scuffles happen from time to time but no blood is ever shed, except when Mommy gets in the way of a mouth trying to break it up. Mommy has much more fragile skin than us tough pugs!
Well, Mommy checked Jasmine over real good and didn't see any injuries or any blood or anything. So everything seemed to be fine...until Saturday afternoon when Daddy noticed Jasmine limping a little. He looked her over and noticed that her right front leg was a little swollen.
I, of course, did my best to protect my beloved Jasmine. Eli acted innocent. Eddie also tried to act innocent...
Gus, who wasn't involved in the fracas because he was busy in his own little world, found his squeaky hamburger...
Mmmmmm...hamburger...
Mommy's right, he's so special...
Here comes the little alien now...
I'll protect you, my darling Jasmine...
That's right, I'm taking Jasmine's side over my crazy sister's...
Seriously, doesn't she just look crazy?
Well, when Mommy and Daddy got up Sunday morning, they noticed that Jasmine's leg was even more swollen and there was a crusty area on her leg just below her shoulder. They decided that they probably needed to talk to a vet. But they said the regular vet doesn't work on Sundays and the emergency vet charges an arm and a leg just for going there besides any tests or medicines. So Mommy looked up PetSmart on the internet and saw that the in-store vet had Sunday hours. So they took Jasmine over there and saw this thing in the sky...
They don't know what it was doing there, but Mommy said it made her think of Salinger's blog from Saturday. If you haven't seen it yet, make sure you check it out! So anyway, they got there and the vet was closed. The people at the store said the vet is always closed on Sundays. Well, that's not what the internet said! They said they would look into that...whatever!
So they bought some treats since they were there and MarrowBones were on sale. Those are the best treats EVER!!! Then they came back home. A little bit later they noticed poor Jas's leg was about double its normal size! So Daddy said they should get her in the bath with some warm water to draw out the infection. They got her in there and the crustiness washed away and pus started oozing out. Yes, I know, that's really gross, but it's an important part of the story.
While Jas was in the tub, Daddy called the emergency vet place to see if they had any suggestions to help. They said to take her temperature and if it was 103 or higher to get her in right away. So Daddy went back to PetSmart to buy a doggy thermometer. When they took her temperature, it was 101.2 which is in the normal range for dogs. By this time the swelling has started to go down since they got a lot of the pus out, so they decided to wait until today to take her to see the regular vet.
Daddy left Jasmine in the big bed this morning and put the gate up so none of us could get to her. Let me tell you, that was really difficult being on the other side of the gate from her ALL DAY!!! And I think she was upset about being away from me too! When Mommy got home from work, she grabbed Jas and took her to the vet. The vet shaved the hair away from the wound area, cleaned it out real good, and gave her a shot. She also gave Mommy some pills to give her which means that Jas will get marshmallows twice a day now! Lucky girl! And the vet weighed Jas and found that she has lost 2 pounds since last year! She is now a slim 20.6 pounds! I guess having all these other pugs around and going to meetup once a month has been good for her!
Ok, I have to warn you, the next couple of pictures are kind of gross. Mommy took pictures of Jasmine's leg. If you get grossed out easliy, please refrain from looking at the next 2 pictures. Everyone else feel free to look...
Do you see the red spot at the top of her right leg? That's where the vet shaved the fur away and the wound is visible. Also notice how the right leg is a bit thicker than the left leg...
Now here's the really gross close-up of the wound...
She sure is glad that's all over now! Now bring on the marshmallows!!!

One last picture Mommy wanted to share...it has nothing to do with pugs, but Mommy thought it was interesting. On her way home from work on Friday she saw this really big plane flying really low...
It's some sort of military plane and was really, really big, although it's hard to tell from this picture just how big it was!
Well, I hope everyone else had a less stressful weekend than we did! And I hope you all have a wonderful week!
Pug hugs and kisses!

Now for a couple of fun pictures and a silly video. Mommy had Petco duty for KPR on Sunday. She decided NOT to take me because evidently I have been dubbed as the "Fun Police". Ok, so I like to keep everyone in line. Ok, so I have a deep bark. Ok, so I greet everyone that walks in the door that's not a pug with my deep bark. What's wrong with that??? So Eli and Gus, the "special" pug, got to go. Gus even got a new toy! How wrong is that? Anyway, here's Eli...
Well, then our good buddy, Lilo, joined Mommy and Daddy and Eli and Gus with her parents, Jess and Ryan. Here's Daddy on the floor greeting Lilo...
Now for the special treat, and by special I mean GusGus. Daddy and Ryan took his leash off and played with Gus and his new toy.
Well, that's all we have for today. Hopefully we'll have picture of ME next time!
Pug hugs and kisses!

Green Saturday

Hey everyone! Big Ern here! Today is a green day because Mommy finally got motivated enough to work on the gardens. She usually starts way before now, but there has been soooooo much going on that she hasn't had a chance.First she went shopping for some new gardening gloves and plants. She was anxious to plant the herb garden, but she was afraid the stores would be out of her favorite herbs. But she was in luck! They had just what she wanted.

Then we went outside with her to get started. Ugh! This doesn't look like a fun job! All that tall stuff is thistle. It can be very prickly if it touches your skin. Boy did Mommy let that get out of control! It was so bad that it made Gus spin in circles!Well, fortunately, the ground is damp from all the rain we've had the past week and the thistle came up pretty easily. Then we got busy planting. Ok, Mommy got busy planting, we just walked around and watched her...to make sure she was doing it right ;-)

Woo hoo! All done with the herb garden! We did such a good job!Bernice enjoyed smelling the fresh herbs...mmmm...rosemary... Now for a real quick tour of the herbs...this is sage...Mommy planted it several years ago and it always comes back. Actually, it never really goes away. Some of it usually stays green even through the winter! It smells good and has pretty little purple flowers. It goes good with pork and chicken... Next is the herb that Mommy absolutely cannot live without! It's basil. She likes the big leafy kind and she uses it in Italian dishes, mostly sauces. She got 2 kinds of rosemary. She says it goes good with oven roasted potatoes. This first one is supposed to be a tallish plant...This other one is supposed to be more of a ground cover...This is purple basil. Mommy's not really sure what she'll use it for, but she got it for looks...Here we have lavender. Mommy has never used it in cooking, but she says she likes the smell of it. It's supposed to be a relaxing smell...And we can't forget the cilantro. Mommy makes fresh salsa for Daddy (quite possibly his favorite food ever) and cilantro really adds something to it. It's also good in grill marinades, especially with garlic and lime juice (and some tequila)...

This is mint...but it's not regular mint...it's chocolate mint! Mommy really doesn't know what to do with this, but she and Daddy will pick some and just sniff it! She said it smells just like Frango Mints, whatever the heck those are...WE'RE not allowed to have chocolate, so we wouldn't know...Great, the herbs are planted, now what are you going to cook, Mommy???
Uh oh...Gus saw a bird...
Now how does he think he's going to catch that bird???
Eddie enjoyed some rolling around in the grass and clover...
Are you freaking kidding me??? That's what we have to do next??? Sam moved all the wood from around the veggie garden and then put it all back inside the garden so he could mow. It really shouldn't be as bad as it looks...the weeding part shouldn't take too long and Daddy promised to help Mommy...
And the Pug Posse is here to help!!! (*cue music*)
Uh oh...looks like we might not get the garden done today...there are some ugly clouds forming overhead...
Stay tuned...we'll let you know how the garden went...
Pug hugs and kisses!

Thankful Thursday

Hi everyone! Pug Mama here hijacking the pugs' blog for today. Today is our 15th wedding anniversary! I can't believe it's been so long. We have been through so much together and we are still best friends :-) We were married at St. Luke's Catholic Church here in Indy. It was an evening wedding and we had the BEST reception EVER!!! We even closed down our own reception...if you know us, you know we always close down the parties ;-)
Monsignor Tuohy officiated. There were about 200 guests, Denny's side were from out of town, mostly Kentucky.
Awwww...

Here's the whole farkakte wedding party (thanks for that expression Laura!)...
This is Denny's family. His brother, Donnie, is on the far left with his wife, Tracie. His sister, Pam, is right behind us with her husband, Eric, to her right. And of course his parents on the far right...
And here is my family. That's my grandmother (paternal) to my right. God willing, she will be 94 in September! My brother, James, is right behind her. Behind Denny's left shoulder is my sister, Debbie. And my parents on the right...
Ok, funny story about our cake topper...I was in a mall and passed by this fancy, shmancy shop that sold all kinds of china and crystal and stuff. In the window they had a wedding cake that was so pretty. It was topped with this Disney figurine of the blue birds from Cinderella holding a light pink ribbon between them. The cake was decorated with ribbons of frosting in colors to match the figurine. I went home and told my parents about it and they acted like that was the most ridiculous thing they had ever heard of. It even kind of hurt my feelings. Well, my birthday before the wedding (my birthday is in February), one of the presents I opened was the exact same Disney figurine! They totally had me fooled into believing they thought it was ridiculous! So the cake was decorated to match the figurine and it was delicious :-d
Ok, enough said...I'm going to go make my wonderful husband dinner now. The pugs will be back soon, I promise to do better blogging for them!
Pug hugs and kisses!
